Law School Budget

Try out our interactive budget worksheet to help you organize and plan for savings to cover your expected law school costs and living expenses.  You should try to save at least 6-8 months of your current salary for living expenses.  Note that student loan refunds are available after the add/drop period in each semester which is approximately 4-6 weeks after the start of the semester, so your savings should get you through at least the first month of each semester.  The law school budget is extremely tight and there is no room for car payments or high credit card debt.  Learning to live on a budget long before law school will help prepare you for the costs associated with attending law school.

Residency

For the purposes of tuition, students are classified as residents or non-residents of the state of Illinois. To be considered a resident, an individual must have been a bona fide resident of the state of Illinois for a period of at least 6 consecutive months immediately preceding the beginning of any term for which he or she registers at the university -or- the individual's parents or guardians are bona fide residents of the state at the beginning of the term for which the student enrolls. To establish residency, specific documentation must be submitted to the Office of Registration and Records within 30 calendar days of the date designated on the official university calendar as the date regular classes begin.

Documentation and instructions on residency are available at Registration and Records.
